Lumus Instruments is a multidisciplinary studio that combines light, sound, and structure with digital technology in installation art and scenography. The studio works with an ecosystem of modular fixtures and tools to explore unconventional embodiments of computational technology.

The studio is directed by Timo Lejeune and Julius Oosting, whose backgrounds span design, architecture, and engineering. Their backgrounds led them to explore synergistic design principles within their artistic landscape.

Lumus stems from the Latin words “Lumen” (light) and “Ludus” (play). The word “Instruments” points to their identity as makers of instruments—precision tools for play.

Lumus Instruments uses digitally animated structures to play with the interpretation of reality. Translation and multiplication, applied as expressive principles, give rise to a minimalist, dynamic form in which geometry informs the logical system that animates it. This creates intimate experiences that are concrete in shape yet suggestive in representation. These structures aim to create a space where people can collectively experience inner worlds and dream of desirable futures.

Drawing on the notion of “experience as the ultimate reality”, Lumus artificially crafts experiences that give rise to a sense of timelessness and radical realism. With a realist-futurist mindset, Lumus creates a sense of the future through the experience of now.
